The Great Migration
January to March - Calving Season in Tanzania
During these months, the Ndutu region in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and southern Serengeti become the center of action as around 500,000 wildebeest calves are born. This attracts many predators, making it an exciting time for witnessing intense wildlife scenes.
April to May - Moving North
As the rainy season begins, the herds start moving northward through the central Serengeti. This period has fewer tourists but offers lush landscapes, making it an ideal time for scenic photography.
June to July - Grumeti River Crossings
The herds gather in the Serengeti's western corridor, preparing for the Grumeti River crossing. This is a thrilling period, as wildebeest navigate the river with crocodile predators lurking nearby.
July to October - The Mara River Crossings in Kenya
During these months, the herds move into Kenya’s Maasai Mara, where the famous Mara River crossings take place. This is the best time to experience intense action scenes as wildebeest face predators and strong currents.
October to November - Return to Tanzania
After grazing in the Maasai Mara, the herds head back to Tanzania as the rains return to the southern Serengeti.
For an unforgettable Great Migration experience, visit the Maasai Mara from July to October or the Serengeti in June and July for Grumeti River action.
